Just wanted to highlight something for the few people who read my blog but don’t read Jason’s (a very small subset of people, but important people to me nonetheless). Weather forecasting companies are trying to shut down public access to user friendly NWS data, and they need to be stopped.
The NWS was originally established 200 years ago to provide weather information for the coasts — fishermen and sailors relied on them for forecasts. That core mission is still there: they are to provide forecasts for public safety and commerce. To that end, the NWS has always been processing available data and making forecasts. What’s new here is the technology allows the NWS to provide forecast data for an exact location. It was simply a byproduct of producing an accurate forecast. The NWS simply stuck on a web front end to allow everyone access to it.
It was decided back in 2003 that because this data was being produced at public expense, the public should have access to it for free whereas they had previously agreed not to compete with private companies providing weather forecasts. That part of it isn’t clear to me, but it does make accuweather et. al. seem less evil. Were I in their situation I would feel like I had been wronged somehow. I don’t know that I’d think this law was the answer however. The public should be able to get this information they paid for through taxes directly from the NWS, not through weather.com. It kinda sucks for the weather companies but life just isn’t fair sometimes. :/
Make your voice heard! Tell accuweather and company that life isn’t fair and they’ll just have to innovate!
As the President and founder of SUB, I’m proud to announce the creation of another branch of the company. This branch will be headed by a long time co-author of SUB, Jim Tobe, as the url indicates. Giving Jim this additional power, authority, and space separate from the main business at SUB will allow for more hillarious content, more often. So please head on over there to give Jim a hearty congratulations.
The codename of Mac OS 10.4 has been known to be Tiger for quite awhile now, but TigerDirect has waited until few days before its release to cry foul. Really smacks of a bullshit blackmailing scheme to me. And the blurb about them loosing their precious search engine ranking? HA! Poor widdle babies, they’re only number 2 when searching for the word tiger. And Apple didn’t even overtake them in google from what I can tell, just yahoo. I wonder if they’re going to go after the Tiger information center next so they can get the #1 ranking for tiger on google? Bottom line, no one’s going to confuse Apple’s new OS for the TigerDirect store. It might happen the other way around, maybe, someone wanting to buy tiger could confuse tigerdirect.com for a site selling the OS, but no one would go to apple.com and expect to be taken to a store called tigerdirect. Furthermore, Apple is acting in good faith and isn’t trying to profit off of TigerDirect’s good name. (Does TigerDirect even have a good reputation anymore?)
I suppose it all boils down to stupid trademark lawyers geting bored/jealous because they don’t get to go to court all the time like other lawyers. :/
Found an amusing link about a wannabe hacker over at applegeeks. I’d say no one could possibly be that stupid, but I’ve underestimated the stupidity of people before. It’s still funny if it’s made up, so enjoy.
Luda and I worked on creating a map for Call of Duty: United Offensive all day yesterday. We laughed, we cried, we swore at our Computers, and we came away with a valuable lesson: even shitty uncompleted maps can be fun.
We also learned that if you check suspended on jeeps, it has interesting effects.

The Quizno’s oven is broken! No quizno’s for the friday lunch crew… :’(
Well, at least we still have BW3′s.
I’ve always wanted to go to Japan someday, but I think I’ll wait until this Ganguro trend passes over. I lost it at the hollywood hulk hogan remark though.
oh, here’s a little more info about the phenomenon, which according to another link has been out of style since 2001, but I don’t think it was ever really mainstream. :/
