Weekend Update

Tag: GeneralJohn @ 12:06 pm

If the f in Friday stands for fun, then the s’s in Saturday and Sunday stand for sucky. I got a lot done during my eight hours at work on Friday so while I was at work, it went fast because I was doing stuff. Besides, I felt good about myself for being at work and getting stuff done after blowing off work the rest of the week. (I think I’m finally over my case of the lazies.) Since I felt so good I decided my program could wait one night, and Allen and I hung out playing my neglected gamecube games. When we sat down to play Super Monkey Ball 2, however, the stupid game said my third party memory card was corrupted/not compatible. What a crock of BS!! That’s the first game that’s ever had a problem with my memory card, which leads me to believe they either screwed up royally in their code or more likely they made it a point to check if it’s one of nintendo’s cards or not. And it’s not even made by Nintendo! It’s made by Sega! Why, oh why Sega do you want to hurt third party peripheral makers? Where was I? Oh yeah, the gaming. After a quick trip to Best Buy, I proceeded to hand Allen’s ass to him in Monkey Fight and Monkey Race, and Monkey Target. I think we played most every mini game, and I will admit without shame that I suck at Monkey Tennis. We put Tony Hawk 4 and while checking out some of the videos it was decided that we had to see Rodney Mullen’s video. That guy does some wicked tricks with a skateboard, sliding on its side and shit like that. After countless attempts I finally managed to beat his pro challenge. I haven’t been able to beat a pro challenge before his. I’ve never felt more victorious while playing a video game. We got in a round of Mario Party too before Allen had to go.
Saturday was spent sequestered in my room, working on my program. The assignment is to simulate a forest fire using several processes (several instances of the same program running at the same time) with each simulating a subsection of the forest. All I managed to get done on Saturday was simulating the entire forest with one process. I couldn’t figure out the multiple processes concept until Sunday when I realized there was no need to limit myself to a total of two or four pipes for all the processes. While only one pair processes may need to talk at one time and require perhaps four pipes to do so, each process can get two out of a list of pipes. After I figured that out, it was trivial to get them to talk to each other. It just took the rest of that night to figure out how to keep them all in line, another problem I created by limiting myself to my idea of an elegant solution. Sometimes you just gotta throw wasteful statements at a problem to solve it without driving yourself nuts. Especially when the whole idea of solving this simulation problem by only working on two rows at a time is rediculous. Did I mention that I didn’t get to bed until 3AM?

Staying Up Late

Tag: ExhaustedJohn @ 2:09 am

…to write this process description of bubble sort. I doubt it was worth it, but I’ve stayed up this late for no reason at all lately. I wouldn’t think twice about it except I had planned to get to bed at midnight for once figuring if I could get on a decent sleep schedule like midnight till 8AM, I wouldn’t sleep in until noon like I did Monday. Oh well…

e-Spirituality: bad

Tag: Stuff That Grinds My GearsJohn @ 12:08 pm

I got a chain email from my favorite brother-in-law Ben yesterday. This email was not like other forms of chain letters which are rightly despised by almost everyone over the age of 8. *Shudder* Indeed, it reminded me of how I came to despise such emails in the first place. The percentage of emails I got that were chain emails wanting me to make a wish that will come true if I forwarded the email when I first got online at the tender age of 12 rivals the number of emails I get today that are spam. No, this email cannot be easily despised as it simply requests prayer for the friends and loved ones who sent this email to you. Make no mistake, however, this email is still a chain letter. It’s intentions are good, but it still essentially demands that I forward it to people who hate chain letters as much as I do. Not only is the premise that I am not a true christian just because I hate chain letters a false one, it’s just entirely rediculous!

Decisions

Tag: GeneralJohn @ 12:20 pm

I’ve managed to put it off for awhile, but with about a year left at WSU I’ve got some big decisions to make. The biggest problem I have is I’m questioning whether I should go for a German minor and/or departmental honors. Doing both would almost certainly mean adding another quarter on to my stay here. A German minor requires I take five classes, and I don’t know if five will be offered in the next three quarters or not. Departmental honors requires a big project/research thing. In any case, I need more info before I can make a decision. I guess I’ll make some appointments next week.

Neo Needs a Beat-down

Tag: Stuff That Grinds My GearsJohn @ 1:18 am

For the past week or two a phrase has been scribbled in chalk all over campus asking: “Do You Agree With Neo?” And I mean all over campus. You’d think writing it a couple times outside of each building would be enough to saturate the campus. Oh no. It’s written three or four times on every square foot of sidewalk at WSU.
I’ve read this question countless times during the past week, searching each and every scribble for some glimmer of meaning. I found nothing that answered my questions. Questions like who the hell is Neo? What is he saying that I could agree/disagree with? Why do I want to deck him and elbow him in the gut? So when I saw a URL in chalk today near a few of the scribbles I checked it out. Looking through the “phorum” (is that supposed to be a cool spelling or something?) I found that the Campus Crusade for Christ is allegedly behind all this as they are the ones who asked the university for permission to write this phrase all over campus (and put up flyers but apparantly those weren’t nearly conspicuous/annoying enough for their liking). That answers questions two and three, but it still doesn’t answer who this anonymous person called Neo is and why they’re using him as a front. A little googling revealed that the CCC is a Neo-evangelist movement which I basically feel is bullshit. The connection is weak, but so is most of the crap they’re trying to sell. Besides, wouldn’t you try to link your cultish organization with a popular movie that has a sequal coming out in a similar way as a sort of publicity stunt? Well I wouldn’t, but that’s because I have more respect for movies like the Matrix than for these numbnuts at the CCC.
