No ‘Net Thanks, I’m having too much fun offline

Tag: GeneralJohn @ 11:53 am

Yeah, yeah… this page is as empty as remy’s. I know. Shove it. I got a 56k connection and ‘net activities aren’t nearly as fun as offline stuff like Catan, THUG, and FFX. Yep, only the basics for me. Like checking email and keeping that under control (oops, haven’t done that for a few days). It’s been a good xmas vacation, and I’m definately enjoying my sleep when I don’t stay up ’till 4AM playing Cities and Knights. I’ll just leave you with a pic of my xmas loot.

OS 9 Purged

Tag: Tech TalkJohn @ 11:50 pm

I’ve been home three days now and I’ve already had two requests for help with peoples’ computers. *Sigh* I partially fixed a minor problem for my mother’s friend with her “email client.” I consider Netscape Communicator to be an email client with the same level of competence as OS 9 as an operating system. Both are definately subpar. Why anyone would want to start a 25 MB piece of bloatware just to check their email is beyond me. I suppose you could say being able to browse t3h interweb with the same program is a plus, but the browser sucks ass as well. It doesn’t display several standards (i.e., stylesheets) properly, standards that were established when it was written 5 years ago. I shudder at the thought of how outdated it and OS 9 both are. if you don’t know what I’m talking about with 9, consider yourself lucky. That’s all I’m going to say. No sane person has used both and can say 9 is anywhere near as good. Period. …er, end of rant.
Anyway, being a nice guy I went against my principles and helped as best I could over the phone. (No way I’m leaving the house to touch OS 9 and communicator.) Despite being handicapped by no knowledge of Communicator, I helped her get rid of the preview pane that bugged her. Chalk one up for me, I guess.
My OS 9 woes are over in our household at least. The other tech request this weekend is also due to OS 9’s shittiness. My brother tried to print something out to a non-existant printer. (that’s actually my own fault… while trying to fix the network at home here, I accidentally clicked a printer in the chooser and forgot to change it back. oops.) This fubar’ed his comp, causing it to freeze and continue to freeze every time after it finished a force restart. A boot from the startup cd and a fix to the printer setup solved that problem, but I decided to kill the root of the problem, OS 9. So I’ve been instaling 10.2 on Jim’s machine all day. 100 MB updates don’t finish quickly with DSL; dialup is 100 times worse. I wish I could have bought Mom and Dad broadband for christmas. It would make the holidays so much happier. ^_^

D’oh!

Why oh why couldn’t I have checked this out before I left my broadband connection for two weeks? I may have to come back early for that… or not. I hope I have enough upstream bandwidth to play over t3h interweb. 128kbps might be more than those SBC bastards can handle. If I can use this I’ll be bringing the blue sparks all over the place. I wonder if heaven has broadband?

Closing Time

Tag: GeneralJohn @ 12:10 pm

I’m busy closing up shop in Fairborn today. I have to pack up all t3h presents, — which I wrapped up last night, btw ^_^ — clothes, entertainment (gamecube, dvds, recorded shows), and everything else I want with me for my two weeks of vacation. Then I need to make arrangements for bills this month somehow, pay any that may arrive today… eh, some may just have to be late. After everything’s packed, I get to clean up shop and beg t3h roomies not to let the place go to crap while I’m gone. I also need to get Toni’s xmas present to her if it comes in the mail today. Then it’s time for the fun drive home.
Mostly I’m just really worried that I’ll forget something.

Late Show

Three…and…one half…hours. My butt’s still sore from all that sitting. Not even ROTK was worth that. I suppose I’ll catch up on sleep eventually.

Festive

Tag: GeneralJohn @ 9:45 pm

I may have actually made the site look crappier in my attempt to get in the holiday spirit. I’m sure it’s a different kind of crappy at least. *Sigh* I tried. There’s a reason I didn’t pursue jobs designing websites and such.

Hope is for Fools

Darn Broncos!! Haven’t you done enough to us already? You’d think our defense could stop them from getting a field goal in a minute. I had hoped that our new kicker had won it with that excellent field goal. :P Guess it’s back to waiting for next year.
