Super Supermarket

Saw a pretty neat picture of a Fred Meyer store (not Fred Meyer’s) linked on BoingBoing and thought I’d share.

No parking for you!

Tag: Stuff That Grinds My GearsJohn @ 12:01 pm

Got a nasty-gram in the mail last weekend that’s been bothering me, but I didn’t want to post about it until I’d calmed down a bit. So here we are 5 days later and I think I can deal. Basically there’s a section in the declaration for the Reserves of Beavercreek that states parking on the street is not allowed.

As one might imagine, a normal human like myself didn’t have the fortitude to wade through all the legalese in that thick document they gave me to look through before I decided to get the condo. So I was blissfully unaware of this rule until I got that letter notifying residents that this rule would start being strictly enforced with fines and towing. This makes things difficult for any guests I might have as after the single available space in my driveway is filled, the closest spot to park is by the clubhouse:

The reason behind this rule is that the reserves’ narrow private roads don’t allow for enough space for emergency vehicles to get through if people are parked along the street. (Even if they’re only on one side of it?) Knowing the reason doesn’t shorten the walk that’s now required nor does it make the waltzing of cars in our driveway less annoying when people are parked in. It does make it feel like these hindrances are worthwhile, however. So perhaps we’ll just be meeting up at Ludizzle’s for awhile.

Poof and foop

Tag: Amusing LinksJohn @ 5:20 pm

Frauenfelder has posted another physics hypothetical. It’s called “Poof and Foop”. When a can with a compressed gas goes poof, the can is moved in the opposite direction of the air escaping, much like a simple rocket. What happens when a vacuum can is punctured? Does it go towards the side that is punctured? The opposite direction? Or neither? My money’s on going towards the side that is punctured as the air pressure on the side that is punctured becomes less than the opposite side. Assuming there’s enough pressure for it to move, that is.

do not call him a poof!

Most people reading this have already met her, but still, she’s a big part of my life right now and I wish I had put something up here sooner. Well, it’s up here now. I’d write more but it’s 3am and I need to rest up so I don’t fall asleep in class.
